Herniated Disc Pressure On Sciatic Nerves

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

On the advice of my excellent chiropractor, I visited a spinal/sports AMA clinic for an MRI to see what was causing such horrendous pain and numbness in my hips and legs. I knew that my falling from a flatbed truck 25 years earlier had herniated at least two of my lumbar discs, but chiropractic had always worked for me until now. The MRI revealed two herniated discs putting pressure on my sciatic nerves, and two more discs that were torn but not herniated. THe AMA doctor's planned course of action was first to prescribe Proxicam anti-inflammatory 10mg/24hrs, plus cyclobenzaprine muscle relaxer 10 mg 3xdaily, plus Tramadol pain killer 50mg 3xdaily. Then in a couple of weeks, he wanted to give me a cortisone shot in my tailbone, and then proceed with physical therapy while the are was calm under that injection.

Meanwhile, my office job of sitting for 9 hours per day on a chair was becoming more and more painful, in addition to the pain I already had. I researched ergonomic chairs and noticed that many people were sitting on medicine balls. They were being banned, however, in more and more offices because employees were falling off of them and claiming work injuries. Then I found the "Ergo Chair," an egg-shaped medicine ball inside a wheeled frame that also acts as armrest and back support. Since using the chair at work (and taking it home every night for another 4+ hours of freelance computer work), I'm off all medication and I have canceled the cortisone shot. I plan to investigate physical therapy + chiro + acupuncture.

The point is that the right chair can make all the difference AND save you money! Check out the Ergo Chair online! (This is a totally unsolicited testimonial.)

Overcoming Challenages

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Who would have thought that overcoming challenges would be so incredibly hard and never ending. As a young woman, I was raped, which resulted in my getting pregnant. An incompetent doctor aborted the pregnancy. I was told because of the complications from the abortion, I would never be able to get pregnant again and if I did, I certainly would not be able to carry it full term. Twenty months later, I was blessed with a baby girl.

My husband and I wanted another child and tried for quiet some time, finally we were blessed with news I was pregnant, however I lost that child. My local doctor found I had early stages of cervical cancer and that my birthing years were closing fast. So fast, in fact with 3 months, and at the ripe old age of age 23 I had a complete hysterectomy. My husband wanting more children left me for another woman who could give him that. (Another blessed event in disguise)

All was well for a few years then my daughter got sick, she had diabetes and I almost lost her. Although raising her alone was in itself a task, I managed to get it done. Finally at age 46, having worked two jobs most my life to make ends meet, I was offered the job of a life time. It took me to Africa where I lived and worked for 14 months as a civilian contract worker and made a great deal money.

One fateful night, I fell and broke my right arm. I was sent back home for surgery and physical therapy. Unfortunately, the doctor had placed me in a full-length cast and sent me on my way back to the U.S. After 21 hours in the air and 13 hours in lay over’s, I arrived home only to find the cast had restricted the blood flow from my forearm down, and I was told I may have lost permanent use of my hand. After 19 months of therapy, and only recovering 50% usage of my right hand and forearm, I was left, with no income, no possibilities of future work in any of the three professional trained areas to which I could support myself. Now, even though I recently starting working, and earning ignorantly less than my cost of living, my insurance does not cover my medications for first 12 months of my employment, and they can deny any cost of these medications as long as they see fit. How nice it is too know I have been working all my life and now at age 49, I cannot even take care of myself financially or medically. I have never had to ask for help, now I have to ask for some type of help almost daily.

Insurance is only for the Healthy

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

After many years of working for others for a living and having employer benefit health insurance that took a big chunk of my paycheck each month my husband and I decided we wanted to reach our dreams and work for ourselves. We began to look at health insurance because having two children ages 5 and 9 one with allergies and asthma and myself with migraines this would be an important part of our budget. After looking into the confusing plans and reviewing the terminology we thought we had found a winner so we signed up! What a shock to go get our 2 monthly prescriptions and be told $323.00… I guess we should have asked a few more questions. We now have tons of paperwork to fill out after each Dr. visit…my daughters allergies and asthma are not covered for 6 months and there is no prescription plan. Wholly cow I hope I read the fine print better in my business then I did when finding health insurance. Needless to say we are on the hunt for another plan only this time I have learned from experience and I have come to realize there is not much out there to choose from…We found a really awesome plan but they wont cover me because of the cost of my medication..so the hunt goes on.

Autism

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

My young son has autism and his medical suppliments and prescriptions are not covered through our plan. I appreciate the discount available.

The best thing about this plan, next to the financial discounts, is that there isn't any paperwork. Thanks Free Pharmacy.

self esteem

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

After the birth of my rd child. I felt that I needed reconstructive surgery on my breasts. I made the decision to have implants. It was one of the best decisions I have made for myself. It gave me the confidence and self esteem to be a better mother and wife.
